Before the final, Spain’s Aymeric Laporte said: “England are so good individually… but they haven’t been able to show football at a great level.” Ex-player, pundit, and analyst, Micah Richards said: “Spain are the best team, no question… but England have some better players.” such as Bellingham, Foden, Rice, Kane and Walker. Ex-player, BBC employee, and social influencer, Gary Lineker, summed up England’s performances leading up to the final with a four letter expletive, undermining squad morale and drawing criticism from captain, Harry Kane, and coach, Gareth Southgate. Gary had apparently forgotten why he was hopeless in the first two games at the 1986 World Cup, where he featured in both England’s 0-1 loss to Portugal and 0-0 with Morocco. Indeed, if coach, Bobby Robson, hadn’t been forced by injuries and suspension to make changes in the final group game, Lineker wouldn’t have won the Golden Boot. How so? Initially, England set up with Lineker and Mark Hateley up front. They didn’t gel. When Peter Beardsley replaced Hateley in the final Group game, v Poland, they clicked:

In the Group games England struggled to beat Serbia, were drab drawing against Denmark, drew 0-0 with Slovenia, only last gasp individual brilliance defeated Slovakia. In the quarter final, v Switzerland, the better team lost on penalties. In the semi final Holland took the lead, Kane levelled with a disputed penalty, and with 5 minutes left Ollie Watkins came on to slot the winner from an angle, and with a quality only van Basten or Pele could have equalled.
Indeed Spain played the best football throughout with cohesive combinations from back to front. Some pundits billed the final as the Best team v the Side with the best players. Usually the better team wins, they did.
